*********************SPRING CAMPOREE ,2008********************
On the weekend of May 16th-18th, troop 35 attended the annual Saratoga District Camporee held at Camp Boyhaven, the boys took part in many different activties during their stay, ranging from first aid skills to knot tying and compass courses. The younger scouts learned how to cook over an open fire and prepare meals for the troop to eat. On Saturday evening they attended the Order Of the Arrow call out ceremony. One Scout from Troop 35 was elected by his fellow scouts, to become a member of the O/A. Adam Pipino must now prove his desire to be in the O/A by attending a weekend at Camp Boyhaven. He must show his willingness to be an O/A member by completeing four tasks set by the O/A. Opon completion of these tasks, he will be fully inducted into the O/A during a ceremony on that weekend

In order for a scout to Advance, Scouts MUST bring their scout handbook to every Troop Meeting. Each scout must have his name clearly written on the side or inside cover of his book.

SCOUTMASTER CONFERENCE:

When a scout has completed all of the requirements for any rank advancement, he must make an appointment with the Scoutmaster for a conference. The scout must present himself to the Scoutmaster in full Class A uniform along with his handbook with all requirements signed off by the correct People.

BOARD OF REVIEWS:

After the Scout has had his Scoutmaster conference, he must then make an appointment with the Committee Members to have a board of review( this is done as each scout have completed the requirements for that rank, ). Scouts will not obtain a rank unless they have a board of review. At the board of review, the scout will go before a panel of 3 adults who are registered Committee members of the Troop, (parents of a boy who is going before a board may not sit on it for that scout). The Scoutmaster and Asst. Scoutmasters may not sit on the board either These members will ask several questions pertaining to the rank the scout is going for and a variety of questions about the overall scout program. These questions are in no way meant to retest the scout, but just to let the board know that you are indeed ready to advance.. ALL SCOUTS WHO GO BEFORE A BOARD OF REVIEW MUST PRESENT THEMSELVES IN FULL CLASS A UNIFORM, HAVE THEIR HANDBOOK PROPERLY SIGNED and ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS CLEARLY. Upon the completion of the board of review, the scout will be told if he has obtained that rank.

MERIT BADGES:

Scouts can begin to earn merit badges immediately upon joining a troop. The scout must first fill out a merit badge blue card for the badge they wish to earn, then have the scoutmaster approve, sign and date the blue card. It is then the responsibility of the scout to contact the merit badge councilor and make an appointment with that councilor(SCOUTS SHOULD NEVER TAKE A MERIT BADGE ALONE, GET A BUDDY TO GO WITH YOU) Once you have met with the councilor, they will discuss with you the way they expect you to complete the badge. This (depending on the merit badge) could be done in 1 visit or it could take a couple of visits with the councilor. The majority of the work will have to be done by you and your buddy at home. You may have to speak before you troop about different requirements or give a demonstration. Once you have fully completed all the requirements and the merit badge councilor has signed your blue card as completed, They will take their part of the card. When you return to the next troop meeting, present the other 2 parts of the card to your scoutmaster or advancement coordinator-so it can be recorded in the troop records. You will receive your copy of the blue card at the next court of honor along with the actual merit badge. The copy that you have MUST BE KEPT IN A SAFE PLACE as this will be the only proof you have of earning that merit badge when you go for Eagle Scout. Baseball card holders work great for this.

Court of Awards

By completeing the Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Reviews, a Court of Honor will be set up, This is a ceremonial event in which each scout is rewarded with his new rank or Merit Badges he has completed. As with the Scoutmaster Conference and the Board of Review, The Scout must be in full Class A Uniform. (Note, in order for the scout to wear the Merit Badge Sash on his Uniform, he must fisrt have earned a total of five merit badges)

ROTARY SCOUT RESERVATION

ONCE AGAIN TROOP 35 WILL BE MAKING CAMP ROTARY OUR HOME FOR A WEEK OF FUN FILLED CAMP. WE WILL BE DEPARTING FROM THE COMMUNITY CENTER ON SUNDAY MORNING JULY 27TH, @ 11:00A.M. AS IN PAST YEARS , IT WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS TO GET THEIR SON TO AND FROM CAMP. RETURN TIME WILL BE SATURDAY MORNING AUGUST 2ND AT APPROX. 10;30 A.M. PARENTS SHOULD PLAN ON ARRIVING AT CAMP ON SATURDAY MORNING AT 8;30AM. CLOSING CEREMONY IS AT 9:30A.M. AND WE DEPART FROM CAMP IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE CLOSING. COST FOR CAMP THIS YEAR WILL BE $260 IF PAID IN FULL BY MAY 1ST, WEBELOS CROSS-OVERS HAVE UNTIL JUNE 1ST TO MAKE THIS PAYMENT. AFTER THE ABOVE MENTIONED DATES HAVE PASSED, THEN THE COST BECOMES $310. MOST OF THE SCOUTS TO PART IN THE GERTRUDE HAWK FUND RAISER AND HAVE EARNED MONEY TO GO TOWARD THE CAMP FEES. A COMPLETE LIST OF WHO HAS MONEY EARNED IS ON THE BULLETIN BOARD IN THE SCOUT ROOM. ALL SCOUTS MUST RETURN TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER TO HELP WITH TROOP EQUIPMENT, WE KNOW THAT EVERYONE WILL BE TIRED AND WANT TO SEE THEIR FAMILY, BUT THE FASTER WE CAN GET ALL CAMPING GEAR PUT AWAY THE FASTER WE CAN GO HOME. AS WITH EACH YEAR AT CAMP, IT REQUIRES ADULTS TO TO HELP WITH THE SUPERVISION OF THE BOYS. THIS YEAR WE ARE LOOKING TO HAVE 3 ADULTS IN CAMP AT ALL TIMES. WE WILL BE ASKING PARENTS DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH WHO CAN COMMIT TO 2 IF NOT 3 DAYS DURING THE WEEK. Purposes of the OA, Scouting's National Honor Society

--To recognize those Scout campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives

--To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others

History of the OA

The Order of the Arrow (OA) was founded by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson in 1915 at the Treasure Island Camp of the Philadelphia Council, Boy Scouts of America. It became an official program experiment in 1922 and was approved as part of the Scouting program in 1934. In 1948, the OA was recognized as the BSA's national brotherhood of honor campers and became an official part of the national camping program of the Boy Scouts of America. Today, the OA is recognized as Scouting's National Honor Society.

Why Join The OA?

Membership into the OA is something that is not to be taken lightly. It is a huge responsibility and honor. As a member, you must live up to the full ideals of the OA. You must be the perfect example of the Scout Oath and Law, during scout activities and in your daily lives. You must seek to preserve a cheerful spirit, even in the midst of irksome tasks and weighty responsibilities. It can be a lot of work, and not everyone could uphold those beliefs and become an OA member, but with work, it is possible for those elected.

How To Elect an OA Member

Just as becomming an OA member is a tough task, electing the members also requires great responsibility. You need to take seriously the importance of your task. In picking a candidate, you need to think back on their entire history as a scout. Are they a good leader? Can they perform tasks when asked? Do they listen to authority? Are they perfect examples of the scout law and oath in their daily lives? These and many others are the questions you must ask yourself.

Membership

To become eligible for election into the OA, a scout must be a First Class scout and have experienced 15 days and nights of camping in the 2 years before his election. An election is held within the troop in which the troop's scouts vote to elect the next OA candidate from their troop. The results are kept secret.

At the spring camporee every year, a callout or tapout ceremony is performed. In this ceremony, the election results are revealed. For our local district, the non-OA members form a ring around the fire with the OA members in a ring behind them. The ceremonies team circles around on the inside, handing arrows to those who have been elected. The candidates move to the center and wait. All this is done in the dark and silently.

After callout, the elected scouts are not OA members. They are referred to as candidates. From here, they must complete the ordeal. The ordeal is fairly secret, as to allow the candidates to be surpriesd when they participate. I can say, however that it is tough. You must pay for your membership into the OA.

Upon completion on the Ordeal, the candidates are partial members of the OA. They are referred to as Ordeal Members. They are allowed to wear a sash with only the arrow.

The next year, the Ordeal Members are asked to participate in the Ordeal again. Should they complete this successfully, they are official members in the OA, known as Brotherhood Members. Now, they wear the sash with the arrow and a red band above and below it. They now have full members in the OA.

After two years as a Brotherhood Member, scouts can receive the Vigil Honor for outstanding service to scouting, his lodge, and the community. This honor is bestowed by special selection and is limited to one person for every 50 members registered with the lodge each year.
